Big News: Impulse Becomes First Battery-Integrated Appliance Certified to Safety Standards

by Impulse Labs | June 8, 2025

Today, we’re proud to announce a milestone that’s been 20 months in the making: The Impulse Cooktop is officially certified and listed to UL 858.

This isn't just a stamp on a box. It’s a signal — to our customers, our industry, and our future — that Impulse is here to lead. At Impulse, we believe that designing the future means taking responsibility for it. Our homes are evolving. Our grid is changing. And the systems that protect people — UL, NEC, local codes — must evolve too.

Testing and listing is how we ensure the appliances in your home won’t just perform beautifully, but operate safely and reliably.

What Certification Means—and Why It Matters

What Is Certification?

Certification is a formal mark of safety, performance, and compliance issued to products that meet the rigorous standards developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global safety science company founded in 1894. Our cooktop is certified by MET Laboratories to UL 858, the U.S. standard for household electric ranges. That means it’s been tested to ensure safe operation under both normal and abnormal conditions.

Builders, retailers, inspectors, and insurers require products in your home to carry this kind of certification. If you want to sell appliances in the US — even something as simple as a toaster — certifying with UL, MET, CSA, or another listing body is the bar.

UL has been setting the benchmark for electrical safety in the U.S. for over a century. If you’ve ever plugged something in and trusted it wouldn’t shock you, overheat, or catch fire—UL likely had a hand in that.

Certification is enforced by:

  • Building inspectors under NEC Article 110.3(B)

  • Insurance providers

  • Retail and distribution partners

Different products — and even parts of products — require their own testing procedures and certifications. We worked with several labs to certify each part of the Impulse Cooktop and the appliance as a whole:

  • UL 1973 Purpose: Batteries for use in stationary and motive auxiliary power applications - Lab: TUV

  • UL 1741 Purpose: Inverters, converters, controllers, and interconnection system equipment - Lab: UL

  • UL 60730 Purpose: Automatic electrical controls - Lab: UL

  • UL 858 Purpose: Household electric ranges - Lab: MET

So when you see the certification mark on our cooktop, you can be certain: This is a product that’s been engineered, tested, and validated to meet the most rigorous safety and performance standards in the country.

So Why Was This So Hard?

Building a safe and reliable electric stove is one thing. But creating a cooktop that also contains a 3 kWh battery and an inverter? That’s a different story.

Impulse technology represents a completely new approach to home appliances. It's an innovative system that reimagines how we cook and power our homes by integrating cooking functionality with energy storage capabilities.

Making this new category of appliance a reality required:

  • Proving safety across both cooking and energy systems

  • Working across categories with regulators who had never seen a product like this

  • Designing every internal component—down to the battery enclosures and circuit boards—from the ground up based on function rather than convention

  • Thousands of hours of standards consultations, policy calls, lab tests, and design iterations to meet the demands of every certifying body and jurisdiction

This was months — many months — of deep engineering and compliance work, and we did it all as an independent U.S.-based company designing, prototyping, and testing from the ground up.

The Future of Appliances Starts Here

Certifying to UL standards opens the door to everything that comes next. More appliances. More partnerships. Greater resilience at home. And a new class of intelligent, battery-powered devices designed to make your life better.

We’re building a future where the appliances you rely on daily also protect you, support the grid, and move us closer to clean energy independence.

Impulse didn’t just meet the standard — we’re setting the standard. And now that it’s official, we can’t wait to show you what’s next.
